The Shwedagon

One of Bhuddisms most famous sites, the Shwedagon dominates the heart of Yangon.  Its many stupas are coated with 27 tons of gold leaf and its spires are inset with rubies, diamonds and many other gems.  We visited at sunset when the gold glowed almost bronze in the diminishing light.  It was here that Aung San Suu Kyi spoke to massive crowds in 1988 and this was the centre of the monks protests in 2007
